NPA Summer Fieldschool 2008 Update

The Historic Dilston Project

The 2008 season of the North Pennines Archaeology Field School at Historic Dilston, Corbridge, Northumberland got off to a flying start on 12th May 2008, with local volunteers and international students all beginning the excavation and cleanup of the Jacobean Range and exploration of the medieval hall north of the upstanding castle.

Week 2 team
Fieldschool Week #2 staff, volunteers and students.

Four weeks into the season (dated as this was written), the fieldschool has established that substantial remains of the medieval hall still exists north of the castle, with thick walls and a number of finds including coins and a late medieval belt buckle being discovered. Further north down the slope, the field school has also continued the work of the 2007 season on the Jacobean Range, and have uncovered further building remains equating to a large expanse of stonework.

By the end of the 2008 Season, the field school hopes to establish the extent of the Jacobean and medieval remains, to fully record the archaeology and to conserve and display the majority of the remains which will remain open for public viewing.
