Kevin Mounsey BA (Hons)

Kevin commenced work with North Pennies Archaeology Limited (NPAL) in September 2005. After having studied GCSE and A-Level Archaeology at evening class he went on to read Archaeology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne as a mature student. He graduated in the summer of 2001, attaining an Honours Degree (2:1). He received an award at his graduation ceremony for completing the best dissertation with local significance. Based around his home town of Penrith, Cumbria it was entitled, The Later Prehistory of the Eamont Valley: A landscape Study and Archaeological Synthesis from the Neolithic to the Later Bronze Age.

After graduating Kevin worked on the Greystoke Castle Estate in Cumbria. Whilst there he took leave to work on two significant excavations, for NPAL, at Scotch Street (Roman and Medieval) and The Malster’s arms (Medieval) in Carlisle. Since joining NPAL full time Kevin has had experience of working on significant sites from a variety of archaeological periods: Neolithic and Bronze Age-New Cowper, Cumbria; Roman-Scotch Street, Carlisle; Medieval-The Malster’s Arms, Carlisle and The Angel Inn, Corbridge; Post Medieval-Dilston Castle, Northumberland; Industrial Archaeology-Harraby Green Mill, Carlisle and Dearham Pottery, Cumbria.

Kevin has resided in Cumbria all his life and is familiar with many aspects of the county. He currently resides in Carlisle. He is particularly interested in Roman Carlisle and the Roman military occupation of Cumbria. He is also interested in all aspects of archaeology in Cumbria’s Eden Valley and 20th century military archaeology. He is a member of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society.

As well as being a versatile Field Archaeologist Kevin has also carried out metal detecting surveys and has recently started working on both resistivity and gradiometer geophysical surveys. He found a significant hoard of Viking silver on a metal detector survey and took part in one of the largest geophysical surveys in Cumbria on Carlisle Airport. He has helped to run the NPAL Field School at Dilston Castle, Northumberland. Kevin holds a current driving licence, a valid first aid certificate, a contractors safety passport and a banksman certificate.
