VACANCY DETAILS

Vacancy: Environmental Assistant
Closing Date: 21st August 2008 at 12pm
Salary: UKP 15,249 pa (BAJR rate G2)

We are looking for a motivated and energetic person to employ as a full-time Environmental Assistant. This is an exceptional opportunity to gain further skills in Archaeobotany, working within a small team of archaeobotanists, who within a larger commercial unit undertake a wide range of professional archaeological projects in the North Pennines as well as from across the country. The organisation's aim is to undertake first-rate analytical projects and to provide expert professional service relating to environmental archaeology, and the successful candidate will be expected to deliver key aspects of this service.

Applicants should be educated to degree level, preferably with specialisms in environmental analysis. Experience of flotting and retent analysis is essential. We seek applicants with a strong interest in Archaeobotany and who intend to pursue a career in environmental archaeology. Archaeological excavation skills are also desirable, as some fieldwork may be required.

The position will involve evaluating samples taken from archaeological contexts, processing them through a flotation tank and analysing the retents for artefacts and ecofacts. An ability to process and analyse samples to a proficient and accurate level must be shown. The suitable candidate will be expected to organise the sample processing and analysis, which requires a methodical and diligent approach to the work. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of managing timetables in a commercial environment. They will have excellent communication skills and experience in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, which will be used in generating archaeobotanical reports and maintaining archives. The assistant will work under the unit's Environmental Specialist Patricia Shaw, and will oversee the day-to-day work of an environmental trainee.

Vacancy: Environmental Trainee
Closing Date: 21st August 2008 at 12pm
Salary: UKP 13,739 pa (BAJR rate G1)

We are also seeking an enthusiastic person to work as a trainee, learning the basics of environmental work, under structured supervision. The candidate will educated to degree level, not necessarily with a specialism in environmental archaeology, or will not be degree-educated but will be expected to show enthusiasm for the subject in their application. The trainee will work under the tutelage of the Environmental Assistant and Environmental Specialist, and will learn all aspects of environmental analysis, leading to a position of an Assistant in the future. The position will involve learning to: evaluate samples taken from archaeological contexts; process them through a flotation tank; and analyse the retents for artefacts and ecofacts. Archaeological excavation skills are desirable, as some fieldwork may be required.

The suitable candidates for both positions will join our team immediately and we can offer a six month contract, subject to a month probationary period; the opportunity for contract extension is likely, but is dependant on workload throughout the next year. Temporary on-site accommodation is available in our bunkhouse, if required, for both interview and initial relocation.
